Can I tell you how excited I am about this new, yet classic trend for coastal cottage styling? The Fisherman Aesthetic! A little bit rustic, a little bit nautical and pure beach cottage fun. Come explore some of our favorite ideas for creating this welcoming look in your home!
You might even find yourself in your favorite vintage store looking for pieces that pull this look together....
Maybe it's because it's the coastal look that I personally am always gravitating towards in my own home: layers of cozy knit accents with hints of nautical (do NOT go overboard!), navy blue stripes, warm natural rattan furniture pieces, woven jute rugs, vintage sailing models, collected beach treasures and rope textures.
Don't forget a pop of warm red hue too!
Here are a few ideas to bring your look together:
Materials and Textures: Natural materials such as wood, stone, and soft woolen natural fibers are central to this layered look. Incorporating elements like wicker or rattan furnishings also adds depth and authenticity. Textural fabrics, including thick cable-knit throws and cozy wool tufted pillows enhance the tactile feel of this design idea too.
Lighting Ideas: Cool wall sconces that fit neatly into smaller cottage inspired spaces are our go-to recommendation! Better yet when the shades are woven of natural materials.
Patterns and Motifs: Use classic nautical cottage patterns like stripes in subdued navy, red and cream colors to maintain a sophisticated look. Thinking ticking stripes or even wider cabana striped designs! Can be in your pillows, but especially cool if you can find a durable area rug with a striped pattern -
Nautical cool motifs—such as anchors, fish, and roped decor—are integrated thoughtfully through items like wall art, textiles, or accessories, adding subtle maritime touches without overwhelming the space.
This does not mean adding a bunch of nautical kitschy "stuff" though - keep curation in mind when adding or subtracting accents. Maybe just your favorite antique finds? Or fun beachcombing finds like glass balls or beach washed wooden floats?
Decorative Elements: Vintage fishing equipment, such as old nets, carved seabirds, wooden buoys, glass floats, oars, and lanterns, can serve as decorative accents. Think outside the box - the trick is to look for decor that feels rustic-like and authentic to you. Perfect for infusing your space with family history and character!
Additionally, items like woven baskets, model boats, and maritime artifacts contribute to the authentic fisherman's ambiance. Again, be super careful with your decor pieces - layer your favorite pieces and looks without starting to look like a nautical gift shop! Takes some practice to get it right -
Our favorite additions? We love nautical folk art inspired wall decor! Even better if it has a mermaid or too...
Come on inside the Fisherman's Cottage, our version of this cozy trend - a warm inviting coastal home decor style that blends rustic, nautical elements with cozy charm, evoking the simplicity and rugged beauty of life beside the sea. Think fishing floats, vintage nautical pieces, rope wrapped details, cozy knits and fun fish.
This style draws inspiration from traditional fishing villages and coastal cabins, creating interiors that feel both timeless and inviting.
Absolutely one of my favorite collections to showcase this season!
